Lotus japonicus regulates root nodulation and nitrogen fixation dependent on the molecular form of nitrogen fertilizer

چکیده
Legumes form root nodules to gain fixed nitrogen from rhizobia and can also access in soil. Data suggest that plants might discriminate among these sources optimize growth, but recognition of symbiotically its regulation remain poorly understood. A greenhouse inoculation study manipulated the molecular concentration available using two Lotus japonicus genotypes nitrogen-fixing symbiont, Mesorhizobium loti. Enhanced nodulation and nitrogen fixation in the abscisic acid low-sensitive mutant enhanced nitrogen fixation1 of Lotus japonicus.
The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is known to be a negative regulator of legume root nodule formation. By screening Lotus japonicus seedlings for survival on an agar medium containing 70 microM ABA, we obtained mutants that not only showed increased root nodule number but also enhanced nitrogen fixation. The mutant was designated enhanced nitrogen fixation1 (enf1) and was confirmed to be mon...
متن کاملLotus japonicus alters in planta fitness of Mesorhizobium loti dependent on symbiotic nitrogen fixation
Rhizobial bacteria are known for their capacity to fix nitrogen for legume hosts. However ineffective rhizobial genotypes exist and can trigger the formation of nodules but fix little if any nitrogen for hosts. Legumes must employ mechanisms to minimize exploitation by the ineffective rhizobial genotypes to limit fitness costs and stabilize the symbiosis. Here we address two key questions about...
متن کاملThe sulfate transporter SST1 is crucial for symbiotic nitrogen fixation in Lotus japonicus root nodules.
Symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) by intracellular rhizobia within legume root nodules requires the exchange of nutrients between host plant cells and their resident bacteria. Little is known at the molecular level about plant transporters that mediate such exchanges. Several mutants of the model legume Lotus japonicus have been identified that develop nodules with metabolic defects that cannot...
متن کاملShoot-applied MeJA suppresses root nodulation in Lotus japonicus.
To maintain a symbiotic balance, leguminous plants have a systemic regulatory system called autoregulation of nodulation (AUT). Since AUT is schematically similar to systemic resistance found in plant-pathogen interactions, we examined the effects of methyl jasmonate (MeJA) or methyl salicylate (MeSA) on nodulation in Lotus japonicus. Shoot-applied MeJA strongly suppressed nodulation in the wil...

1.1 Biological nitrogen fixation and nitrogen nutrition in soybean plants Biological nitrogen fixation is one of the most important processes for ecosystem to access available N for all living organisms. Although N2 consists 78% of atmosphere, but the triple bond between two N atoms is very stable, and only a few group of prokaryotes can fix N2 to ammonia by the enzyme nitrogenase. Annual rate ...
